Site Information

  • All trash must be sorted properly for recycling and removed from the building.
  • All youth under 14 must be directly supervised by a responsible adult.

Description

Practicum is an opportunity to learn and share about your SCA passions or discovering new ones, in a casual atmosphere. Spend the day enjoying the speakers series and visiting a variety of hands-on learning booths or sign up for a half day workshop. In the evening, join in an Ancient Roman dining experience or participate in music and dance classes.

Participants in court and evening activities are expected to dress in pre-17th century clothing. Please change into garb by 4pm. 

Workshops

Herjolfsnes Hood

Being taught by Lady Matilda la Zouch

Description

Hand stitch a hood using the stitches present at the Norse settlement in Greenland 500 years ago.

Materials may be required.

Class Fee yet to be set. 

All youth under 14 must be directly supervised by a responsible adult.

 

Soap Making

Being taught by Baroness Dubhessa, in the morning. 

You will need to wear practical and safe clothing for working with caustic materials; long sleeves, an apron and gloves. 

Description.. 

You will be able to take home a sample of the soap you made, so bring a small container to carry it home in case it is not totally solid yet.

Gessoed Panels & Egg Tempera

Being taught by Dame Elspeth in the afternoon

Special Instructions: This class can be messy, so please be prepared for some paint or gesso to get on your clothes

Description.. 

Gesso your own panel using traditional materials and then depending on tim learn how to get started with egg tempera. There will be instruction on how to use the binder and paint, as well as basic egg tempera techniques.

Materials: Bring your small detail brushes, and if desired a dust mask as we will be mixing materials to make gesso.

Class Fee: TBA this is to cover cost of wooden supports, gesso supplies and pigments for a small board. I have a lot of left over supplies so hope to keep this down to a minimum.

 

Smocked Apron

Being taught by Dame Helen in the afternoon.

Description.. (in progress)

Pleat and stitch an apron that was popular in many European countries in the 16th century.
