Unto the accomplished populace of Skraeling Althing do Baron Shahid and Baroness Catherine send greetings.
Though winter is far from over, the hours of daylight are increasing, hinting at the promise of Spring. It is at this time that We announce Our taxes for the coming year, to be presented to Us at Feast of the Hare in November.
Traditionally, we present Our populace with a theme and leave it at that. This year We have chosen to do something different. Because of the unusual nature of this year’s taxes, We would like to take the time here to explain how this works in detail.
We present to you ‘The Great Baronial Bead Challenge’.
Attached to this missive is a link to a printable booklet. This same document will be available on the Baronial blog, and from Us in hard copy. Within this booklet is a list of activities We would like to see more of in Our Barony.
When you complete an activity on the list, sign and date the entry. These completed entries can then be brought to Us and traded for a glass bead (red for service, white for martial, and green for arts & sciences).
Though you are of course very welcome to repeat activities you enjoy, you may only trade in each item on the list for a bead once. We will initial your booklet to show you received a bead for that entry.
Also please note, We have done Our best to add varied activities covering all aspects of SCA life. We do not expect anyone to complete every activity in the booklet. That’s just crazy!
Now, how does this relate to taxes? Glad you asked.
The theme for this year’s taxes is ‘beaded things’.
Use your collected beads somehow, and show us what you have done at Feast of the Hare. String them on a necklace. Embellish your garb. Bling up your scabbard. Make a mosaic. Decorate a banner.
Nor does this have to be an individual challenge. Team up and pool your beads. The possibilities are as wonderful and varied as the people in Our Barony.
In Service,
Shahid and Catherine.
