Greetings unto the vigilant populace of Skraeling Althing from Baron Shahid and Baroness Catherine.
We would like to take some time to discuss awards in Ealdormere.
Ealdormere and the Barony have several awards that are given for many reasons, most notably in recognition of deeds, achievements, and service to the Kingdom and the Barony. An overview of kingdom awards is provided here: http://www.ealdormere.ca/awards.html. An overview of Baronial awards is as follows (taken from the Skraeling Althing website):
- Bunny Tail: Also known as a “Piece of Tail”. This is usually the first Baronial recognition a person gets and is used to acknowledge that a newcomer is now “one of us” and is a valued member of the Barony.
- Order of the Hare Salient: This is the Baronial-level service award and is given for outstanding service to the Barony of Skraeling Althing.
- Order of the Friends of the Hare: This award is the equivalent of the Order of the Hare Salient, but is given to people from outside the Barony of Skraeling Althing or to people who are leaving the Barony to move elsewhere.
- Order of the Black Hare: This award is given in recognition of outstanding achievement and contributions to the Arts and Sciences within the Barony of Skraeling Althing.
- Order of the Hare Valiant: This award is given in recognition of outstanding achievement and contributions to the Martial Arts within the Barony of Skraeling Althing. The “Martial Arts” include: armoured combat, rapier combat, archery, thrown weapons, and equestrian activities.
- Great Chalice of Skraeling Althing: This award is given to an individual or individuals who are seen as exemplars of authenticity in their recreation, and whose qualities of service, hospitality, courtesy, dress and deportment are foremost. Specifically, it recognizes the person or persons who have advanced the cause of authenticity in diverse aspects of Baronial life. This award is open to any member of the Barony regardless of rank or office. As this award will make the recipient(s) the Baronial Cup Bearer(s), it will be presented in succession.
- Order of the Tantony: This award is given in recognition of outstanding achievement and contributions within the SCA by a member of the Barony of Skraeling Althing who is less than 16 years of age. The Tantony is the smallest bell in a carillon of bells. Even the smallest voice contributes to the harmony of the Barony.
Often We are asked how good gentles are chosen to receive honours. This is where YOU come in to play. The writing of award recommendations is both a right and a responsibility in the SCA. If you feel someone is deserving, please write them in. You DO NOT need to hold the award in question to recommend someone for that award. You can recommend any person for any award at any time. The awards process in the SCA does not work without everyone doing their part to submit award recommendations.
What information should be included in an award recommendation?
Your name and contact info, the nominee’s name and home branch, the name of the award you are recommending them for, and why you think it should be awarded. Try to give as much information in your reasons as possible. Helpful but not required bits of information are the nominee’s persona details, and what events you think they will likely be attending. It is also courteous to inform the nominee’s Baron and Baroness when sending in a Kingdom award recommendation, so they can voice their own support if they so choose.
How do I submit an award recommendation?
Both Ealdormere and the Barony have online forms to make recommending an award as easy as possible. If you prefer, you can also email your award recommendation directly to Their Majesties, Their Highnesses, and/or Their Excellencies. Email addresses can be found on the Kingdom and Baronial web sites.
